So you've always desired to start a blog right? Great idea.

But however, you are yet to start because you probably don't know how to go about it right?

And there’s so much info out there on the web telling you to do different things. Who do you listen to? Where’s the starting point? How do you go about it?

Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, you’ll learn how to create a professional blog.

Having created several blogs myself and currently managing this one, I'll be guiding you through the step-by-step process I used in creating my blog. No coding nor programming skill needed. So you can relax and continue reading

A professional blog is one of the most effective ways to share your expertise, improve your SEO and get more visitors to your site. And that's exactly what you'll be creating when you follow the steps outlined here - a professional blog.

Why should you create a blog and join the blogging community?

I won't be answering this for you and telling the various reasons why starting a blog is a great idea cos you probably already know that. Or why else would you be reading this guide?

Whatever your reason is to start blogging, hold on to it. You're on track.

Start Your Blog in 10 Easy Steps

The steps covered in this guide is nowhere near as difficult as setting up a website from scratch where you have to deal with all the technicalities of coding and programming. In fact, there’s no coding nor programming required by you. Cool huh?

I'm sure you've already decided on what to blog about and the title for your blog, so I'll skip those and take you to the main business of starting your blog. But if you haven't done that already, you should probably pause now and do that.

Follow this guide exactly, and you’ll have your own blog set up in 30 minutes or less.

  3. Customize the design of your blog to match your style.

Step 1: Choose a great blog platform

It’s time to choose a great platform for your blog. Choosing where you want to build blog is pretty much the first thing you have to do.

Having tried out several platforms like Wix, Wordpress, Blogger among many others which I haven't tried, I chose Wix for it's simplicity, cool templates and almost infinite ways to design and layout my blog, and this is the platform I advocate. It’s too cool not to use it.

Step 2: Choose your blog template

Having being able to convince you to create your blog on wix, I’m going to move on based on the premise that you’ve chosen Wix, and if you haven’t, you should. Seriously, you'll love it.

Step 3: Customize the design of your blog to match your style

As mentioned earlier, you can either custom build your blog yourself and build your blog using the Wix ADI.

If you'll be building yourself, you will start by selecting your most preferred template as stated in the previous step. To do so, select your blog in the Wix Editor and click Settings. Here you can change the layout and customize the design, including your font, background color and menu design. When it comes to fonts, pick one that fits the look and feel of your site.

The other option will be to use the Wix ADI builder. To do so, simply select the Wix ADI option in the choose template page and Just answer a few simple questions about your blog and Wix ADI will create a blog for you, tailored to your specific needs.

Step 4: Give your blog a name

An ideal name should reference your business, what your business does or what your blog posts will be about. Choose a name that fits the tone and brand of your business and your subject matter. For inspiration or ideas, take a look at your list of keywords. These words can help you think about the main ideas that you want to emphasize in your blog. Plus, Google will love it if you include keywords in your blog name.

Tip: Before deciding on your name, do a quick search online to see if the name, or a similar one, has already been taken.

To add your blog’s name:

  1. ​Go to the Wix Editor and click on Menus & Pages

  2. Select your blog and click the Show More button

  3. Click Rename and enter the name of your blog

Step 5: Choose a hosting plan

Before going any further, you'll have to make a major decision here in terms of your web hosting plan. Web hosting is what makes your blog and all its content visible on the Internet. You need to decide between using a free hosting plan or a paid plan.

With Wix, you get free, secure hosting as soon as you publish your blog or website. There’s no need for installation and you’ll automatically get 500MB of cloud storage and 500MB bandwidth. You can always upgrade to get more storage space.

Awesome, right? It’s perfect if you're still testing the waters and ain't that super serious yet about blogging. But I mus warn you, it does have downsides:

  1. You won’t be able to get your OWN domain name: On a free hosting plan, your blog’s web address (your URL) won't be catchy, but it can pass. It’ll look like this: www.yourblog.wixsite.com

  2. You can’t fully monetize it

  3. You won’t have the possibility to upload all those videos and images you want to show everyone

  4. You won’t even have access to the free themes offered by WordPress.

  5. You DON’T actually own your blog. And I mean this in every sense of the word

So how much does paid hosting and a domain name cost?

Fortunately, it's not as expensive as you might think. And depending on your hosting package, you can choose to pay monthly at about $15 to $27 per month.

Step 6: Connect your domain

Your domain is your address on the Internet. It’s what people type into their browser to get straight to your website. With Wix, you can connect a domain you already own or purchase a new one. When possible, choose a domain that includes your business name and ideally one of your keywords about you or your business. Choose one that’s simple to spell and easy to remember so your readers can easily find your blog and tell their friends where to find it. To purchase your own domain:

  1. Go to your site dashboard to connect a domain

  2. Choose to buy a new domain

  3. Search for a domain and select one that’s available

  4. Pick a registration period and fill out your info

  5. Choose public or private domain registration

  6. Add your payment details and redeem your 1 year free domain voucher

Step 7: Publish posts and go live

Now you’re ready to add your first blog post! Open your Blog manager and click ‘Create New Post’. Add your content and customize the look with images, videos and more.


Including a Call To Action (CTA) can help readers understand what to do next after reading your blog post. Include at least one clear intention, like subscribing to your mailing list, and make it simple for them to do it. Popular CTAs include ‘Subscribe’, ‘Create an Account’ or ‘Download My eBook’.

Step 8: Customize your SEO title and description

Now it’s time to use your keywords to show readers and search engines what your blog post is about. You’ll do this by adding an SEO title and description.

Your title appears at the top of Google search results when someone enters a search phrase. Keep it under 60 characters long and include the name of your blog.

Your description appears below your title and should summarize what your blog is about. According to SEO best practices, you should try to keep it under 160 characters.

As you write your SEO title and description, make sure you accurately describe what your blog is about and integrate your keywords in a natural way. The titles and descriptions should be easy to understand and will encourage readers to come from Google to your blog.

To add an SEO title and description to a blog post:

  1. Go to the Wix Editor and click Blog on the left.

  2. Select Manage Posts and click Edit next to a blog post.

  3. Inside your blog post click Post Settings and then click the SEO tab.

  4. Edit the unique URL for your blog, add an SEO title and description.

  5. Take a look at the preview to see how your post will appear on Google.

  6. When you’re happy with your text, hit Save & Publish.

Step 9: Structure Your Blog

Once you’ve added a few posts to your blog it’s good to think about your blog’s structure. A well structured blog makes it easy for your readers to navigate and may even increase the time they spend reading.

For example, you can add recent or featured posts to showcase your favorite blog posts. 

You can also set up categories and hashtags. These will make your blog easier for readers to navigate. Categories are used to organize large groups of posts with a similar topic.

For example, if you have food blog, you could create a ‘recipes’ category. Each category in your blog should eventually be associated with a minimum of 10 or 20 posts. 

Hashtags describe a post more specifically based on your keywords. As you write your blog posts, aim to tag each of your posts with 5 to 15 hashtags.

Step 10: Share Your Posts

Congratulations! You’ve published your first blog post. The next step is to make sure your post is seen. Learning how to start a blog is not only about getting set up, but about user engagement.

Promote your blog through social media, Social media is a powerful tool for getting more people to read your blog. Once you’ve published, share your post with everyone – share it on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn or any other platform where you’re active.

Ask your friends, family and colleagues to share your post.If you don't share it, no one will know it about it. So let them know.
