To start and conduct business activities in Nigeria, you are required by law to get the business registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

CAC is the body charged with the responsibility to regulate the formation and management of companies in Nigeria.

The first step should be to check business name availability status with CAC to know if your desired business/company name has already been registered by someone else.

The Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has an online portal that enables you to do this from the comfort of your home at zero charge.

To check business name availability status with CAC, follow this simple steps:

  1. Click here, to visit the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) website

  2. Type the company/business name you want to check in the space provided (ignore putting "Plc", "Limited" or "Ltd")

  3. Check the "I am not a robot" CAPTCHA box and

  4. Click the “Search” button.

If the business/company name has already been registered, you will get a result with the following information about the company (the RC Number, Company Name, Address and Date of Registration).

If registration is ongoing, you won't see it's RC Number, you will see Undergoing Registration. The result will also detail the name and current registration status of the company.

However, If the business name has not been registered, the result table will be blank. Sometimes, you will get many results if the company has other companies bearing similar name, just scroll down to locate the company with matching name.

Upon registration by the commission, a Certificate of Incorporation, which contains the business registration details is issued.
