Start a Freelancing Side Business Today on Fiverr to Earn Extra Income

Updated: Apr 9

The Side Hustle Post community has been asking a lot about the world of freelancing and how to get started, so considering I've been freelancing since 2016, I thought I’d share my knowledge on freelancing to guide you in getting started and get your first client.

That first client is what you need to get the ball rolling. When it comes to the online community, no one wants to be the first to try out a product/service. Everyone wants to rely on others experience and what they have to say. Everyone wants to checkout others reviews. In freelancing, client's review is the hard currency.

To get the ball rolling, you simply need just one client. One client to get your first pay and review. One client to get the ball rolling. One client to make a difference.

Don’t get caught up in thinking you need ten clients to start with. You just need one to start. Get your first client is how you get the 10th client and start making more money

Before I go into how to start and get that first client. have you checked out this post on 20 skills you can turn into side business now

  • Getting Started

There are actually a host of others like UpWork, Freelancer, and they're all great. But for the purpose of this post, I'll be talking about Fiverr. And you could actually apply the knowledge gained here on the other platforms I case you'll like to spread your tentacles (which I'll advice you do) so as to have alternative channels. I actually started off this way before I eventually settled and focused on Fiverr.

When Fiverr first started, the maximum you could charge for a service was $5. Now you can charge anywhere from $5 to $995. So your earning power is unlimited.

  • What you Need to Get Started

All you need is a mobile phone (but a PC is preferable when signing up), internet and 5 to 10 minutes set up time.

  • Signing up

To sign up, go to www.fiverr.com and click on join.

After signing up, the next step will be to set up you Gig (This is basically the service you'll be offering, service description and your price) and create various packages - Basic, Standard and premium.

NB: Use your correct details when signing up. The importance of this cannot be over emphasized.

  • How Much Does it Cost to Sign up?

Signing up on Fiverr or any other freelancing platform is free

  • Creating your Gigs

Before you start creating your gigs, do a research on others offering similar services. Find out the service is listed, service description, the various packages deliverables per package and prices. Use the information gathered here to create yours. As much as possible, avoid copying and pasting. However you could use a few texts or phrases from another profile when creating your gig. For each package, you can add Gig extras and charge additional fees. A common extra is fast delivery, where a buyer pays an extra fee to have you deliver the service more quickly.

  • Getting Clients

After signing up and creating your gigs, the next step will be gain clients. This is the advantage using a freelancing platform like fiverr has over going about freelancing on your own. There's already a database of clients in need of specific services and waiting for you to send in your proposal.

To find clients and send proposal;

  1. Download the fiverr app and log in

  2. Click on the user icon on the bottom right

  3. In the list of display, click on buyers request.

  4. And you'll see a list of potential buyers who have submitted forms detailing their need and budget. Scroll through to find one that suits you.

  5. Then click on send offer and submit your proposal.

From that point, it's no more up to you. The quality of your proposal and reviews from past clients are the major determinants if you'll close the deal or not. Then at times, it's solely based on the client's discretion.

I know you're probably thinking you're at a disadvantage since you're just starting and don't have any completed projects yet not client review.

Just say HELLO to me and I'll share with you an insider secret on how to quickly get that first completed project and review.

NB: Please ensure you've signed up and created your gigs first before reaching out.

  • Setting Your Price

You might want to start off on a low price. You don’t have to charge high prices right away. On Fiverr, $5 is the minimum and that's a common starting price. But during the research stage I discussed about earlier, the prices of others in your niche should guide yours. Don't make yours too low. And at the same time, don't set it as high as the freelancers who has been on the platform for a while with lots of completed projects and client reviews.

  • Withdrawing your Earnings

When you’re ready to cash out, you have a few options to withdraw your funds:

  1. Direct deposit to a bank account (only available to US sellers).

  2. PayPal

  3. Bank transfer

  4. Fiverr Revenue Card

The Fiverr Revenue Card is a debit card supported by Payoneer and Mastercard.

This post basically covers what you need to know to start up your freelancing side business on fiverr. I'll go more in depth on how to safely withdraw your funds in another post as well as all insider tips, pros & cons.

I'm always available for any question or assistance you might need.

Stop waiting and just get started already
